Hellbender Survey

Sat, 06/11/2011 - 10:30am - 7:00pm

Join TMI and Joe Greathouse, Curator of Animals at the Good Zoo at Oglebay in Wheeling, WV, as we survey one of the forks of the Greenbrier River for Eastern Hellbenders, the largest salamanders in North America.

We'll be in the river, lifting large rocks, and feeling around for the critters. After we catch the hellbenders, we'll collect data, tag, and release them. The survey is part of Greathouse's WV Dept. of Natural Resources funded research in the waterways of West Virginia. The more volunteers we have, the more hellbenders we'll find!

If you'd like to help out with the search, meet us at the former Hermitage Motel in Bartow, WV, on Saturday, June 11th at 10:30 am. For a map, click here. We'll need to know how many volunteers are coming, so please RSVP by contacting Liz Gutierrez at (304) 567-2632 or lgutierrez@mountain.org.

Join us afterwards for Stars & S'mores back on Spruce Knob!
