June 18-22, 2012: Tectonics in the Solar System. This professional development workshop will focus on developing teachers’ conceptual understanding of geologic processes that occur on the Earth and throughout the solar system through collaborative programming facilitated by The Mountain Institute, Fairmont State University, and the NASA IV&V Facility Educator Resource Center.

******************************    ***********    ********************

THIS WORKSHOP HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL JUNE 2013

Program Highlights:

  • Learn with FSU Geo Science educators and WV K-12 science teachers.
  • Explore geological formations around highest point in WV, the Spruce Knob- Seneca Rocks Area.
  • Develop competence in field based teaching methods.
  • Gain experience using field equipment for interpretation and analysis of structure and composition of landforms, outcrops, and rocks.
  • Include study of basic geochemistry and hydrology.
  • Design interactive models for mountain formation
  • Night sky observations and planetary geology using telescopes and TMI observatory

This program will bgin with classroom sessions at the Fairmont State University campus then move to The Mountain Institute's Spruce Knob campus for field based studies and field trips. Teachers will be introduced Reading the Landscape curriculum. Participating teachers may sign up for our Reading the Landscape class field trips with pretrip visits included. See below.

Program Highlights:

  • Comprehensive overview of Appalachian Geology, Forest Ecology, and Habitat Comparisons
  • Field-based, hands-on, investigative activities
  • Project based instructional methods and material to complement field based content & skills
  • Half and full day sampling of our RTL program options

Full participation includes a pre-trip classroom visit and an overnight field trip to TMI’s Spruce Knob Mountain Center.  Programs are designed to fit classroom needs, with teachers selecting from half day activity options including: plant kingdom investigation, karst topography study, insect or amphibian investigation; habitat comparison, stream analysis, soil study, orienteering, riparian zone restoration, or 1-2  day Spruce Mountain geology and extreme environment exploration.

TMI requests schools contribute $5-$25 per student and the cost of transportation.  Funding for the workshop and field trips is provided by the Toyota USA Foundation.Grant funding is available for public school teachers and indiciduals wishing to participate in full programs or PD Workshops.

July 30th - August 2nd, 2012: Appalachian Watershed and Stream Monitors:  Open to teachers, watershed organizers, and concerned citizens. Immerse yourself in water quality monitoring techniques, stream restoration options with youth, and the wonders of headwaters streams while covering multiple science and social studies CSOs!

Program Highlights:

  • Citizen Science: all data is uploaded to the DEP Save Our Streams Database
  • Learn DEP Save our Streams Monitoring protocols
  • Investigate water quality and watershed systems in a multi-tiered program
  • Bring your students on an overnight class field trip to the Spruce Knob Mountain Center to sample water quality in a model stream, participate in a restoration activity, and learn about watersheds
  • Have TMI instructors visit your community to help students collect local data
  • Compare and analyze results
  • Hypothesize connections between local land use and water quality

Participate in the workshop as a stand alone, or participate in the full program with your students. To register click here.
