Tibet Plateau Development Project (TPDP)

Based on TMI’s many years of experience and network of relationships in ethnic Tibetan areas, the goal of the Tibetan Plateau Development Project is to strengthen Tibetan communities’ capacity for meeting their socio-economic needs, while conserving the environment and preserving their cultural heritage.

The TPDP’s three main objectives are: (1) to improve livelihoods by building capacity of targeted communities and enterprises to plan, implement, and monitor more complex programs through work the Diqing Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan and/or the Aba Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan; (2) to improve environmental conservation and natural resource management of the rangeland; and (3) to increase the capacity of Tibetans to preserve their unique cultural heritage.

We have highlighted several projects that have been developed and administered under TPDP. If you are interested in learning more about the range of subgrant projects that are underway, or how you can get involved with TPDP, please contact us.

Nixi Artisan Initiative (China)
TMI has focused on the Tibetan handicraft industry in Yunnan Province of China, specifically on developing and preserving Nixi Black Pottery. According to archaeological evidence the black pottery from Nixi is an ancient local tradition dating back at least 2,000 years. By linking artisans to markets and building their design capacity, this initiative has allowed the almost 800 inhabitants of Nixi Village to preserve their cultural inheritance while investing in their future.
