West Virginia Public Schools Program

Educational programs offered by The Mountain Institute (TMI) to WV schools provide hands-on outdoor learning opportunities that stimulate students’ curiosity, understanding, and retention. TMI’s programs blend science and social studies, and integrate an element of adventure along with group dynamics and character development.

What we have developed here at The Mountain Institute is an education program that will give all students a chance to discover answers to their questions, not just through reading and writing, but through actual experience. Students will have the opportunity to see, smell, hear, and touch the natural sciences. The "Reading the Landscape" program is designed to serve students of all learning styles. We do all of this, while meeting CSO’s from several different subject areas in one session. The Mountain Institute is recognized by the WV Department of Education, Office of Instruction for the Sciences.

“Reading the Landscape” offerings vary in content according to teacher and student needs. In format, however, they consist of two or more sessions that serve to reinforce learning. An outdoor, field-based session is generally balanced with an in-school or in-community visit by TMI’s instructors.  We are striving to pair each class with the perfect, local, citizen science activity. "Reading the Landscape" is funded by the Toyota USA Foundation.

What kind of program suits your class best?

We can mold any trip to meet your needs and expectations. We offer day trips, overnight visits, wilderness camping experiences, in-depth science curriculum, team building activities, and adventure programming. There is great value in working with students more than once, so our staff can visit your school prior to your visit to help prepare the students or make a follow-up visit to reinforce everything that we’ve studied. We will work with you to find a cost that fits your school’s budget.

We recently hosted a Professional Development Workshop for teachers and are currently planning a teacher training with a potential for professional development credit for Summer 2010.
