The North America Program's landfill gas-to-energy project works with public entities in West Virginia to create facilities that collect methane gas emitted from landfills as they decompose, and utilize the methane as an energy source to fuel businesses. Destruction of methane gas through combustion removes a potent greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. Working through Mountain Community Energy LLC, a company owned by TMI, the project has three primary objectives: social (job creation), economic (revenue from sale of methane gas), and environmental (removal of carbon-based pollutants). Mountain Community Energy is also exploring the potential of carbon offset projects to generate revenue for mountain communities.
