For over 35 years, SKMC has served as TMI’s base for outdoor education programs, applied research, conservation, demonstration, and training initiatives, and myriad other activities, all designed to conserve and promote mountain environments and culture. Educational programs are offered for all ages, and generally run from mid-March to mid-November. Throughout the year, the property is supervised by the full-time program officer, who lives on site with his family. Most other program staff resides at the center during the active season.
SKMC is a rustic facility that has instituted architecture unique to the area. Many of the buildings are yurts, a round structure that originated in Mongolia. These buildings house a kitchen, dining area, office, library, and classroom. The facility also includes staff housing, restrooms, and two dormitories that each sleep twenty people.
