Andean Paramo Program

Since 1997, TMI has worked with local and regional governments of Peru to protect the páramo, alpine grasslands threatened by degradation caused by deforestation, tourism, and mining.  TMI has worked closely with the Region of Piura in northwestern Peru to protect the paramos by sponsoring field visits, bringing international paramo specialists to train authorities, producing first time detailed maps of the ecosystem, installing hydrology measuring stations to document the importance of paramos as sources of water for the dry coast, organizing public awareness events, and building trust with decision makers to demonstrate that the intent of conservation in paramos is not anti-development but actually part of a wider and richer vision of the natural wealth of the region.

By providing an abundance of ecosystem services, the paramo accommodates irrigation needs, and agricultural support through cattle grazing.  In collaboration with the regional government of Piura, TMI Peru is conducting further studies to help define the geographical scope and nature of a pamaro conservation area sanctioned by regional legislation.

Since its creation, TMI's Andean Pamaro Program has expanded into Chetilla, Ronquillo, Pacaypama, and Ayabaca regions of Piura in northern Peru.  TMI has provided technical support to local communities creating Management Plans, and further collaborated with other local NGO partners.  TMI has also offered these communities training on participatory approaches to conservation and support in institutionalizing local and regional action for the implementation of these plans.  TMI is dedicated to protecting the water sources of Piura and Santa rivers, two of the most important basins of northern Peru.
