Dr. Reinhard will be venturing back to high altitude sites in Southern Peru. Given the ever-present danger of looting, precise location details will not be available until the actual expedition. Dr. Reinhard feels that, "we have only just begun our story with many of the sites we have previously been to and even if we had completed an escavation in one spot, there are neighboring areas that we give us a fuller understanding of what actually happened".

"There's a lot of work that we have to do to help fill out the historical picture... We have to also be concerned about low lying sites, because they are the station points to go onto the higher altitudes."

Bell Sygma International and high altitude archeologist Dr. Johan Reinhard are pushing the envelope of communication technology. Working together, the two have developed a rugged and portable communications office. Using advanced technology, Dr. Reinhard will transmit to the world, immediate first hand information about his expedition. Rugged Lap Top Computer - Meets military computer standards - Works at extreme hot and freezing tempuratures - Withstands 100G shocks - Made of composite graphite materials Satellite Phone - Works around the world - Capable of voice, fax and data calls - Internet capable - Extremely clear connection Digital Camera - Photographic quality pictures - Internet ready - Light weight - Instant results Digitial Camcorder - Light weight (under 1 lbs.) - 100X digital zoom - Extremely clear videos - Color viewfinder Portable Solar Panels - Under 4 lbs. - Flexible - Wheather resistant - Temperature resistant Wind Driven Generator - Only 19 lbs. - High power output (350W) - Runs 24 hours/day Gas Generator - Only 19 lbs. - High power output (350W) - Runs 24 hours/day

Dr. Reinhard’s work involves using not only the normal tools of archaeology (such as measuring tapes, notebooks, cameras, compasses, trowels, brushes, GPS, etc.), but also mountaineering equipment (such as ice axes, backpacks, ropes, altimeters, climbing boots, special sleeping bags, clothing, stoves and tents, etc.). Other items for 1997 include a laptop connected to a satellite phone, walkie talkies, a metal detector, a digital still and video camera, solar and wind charged battery systems, and medical supplies for emergencies. He keeps a checklist with categories for each kind of equipment he needs. One such checklist that was developed by one of this fall’s participants provides an idea of the kinds of gear being taken:
