| Objective: The
creation of an independent piece of
expository writing reflecting on the
significance of studying the past. Materials:
http://reinhard.sympatico.ca/educ/past.htm
Activities:
1. In reading groups students will
prepare a formal response to the
aforementioned piece in terms of:
- main message
- audience
- organization and structure
- tone and voice
2. After comparing the group
responses, students will prepare a
personal piece of writing (300-500 wds.)
modeled on the Reinhard piece and some of
their own reflections upon what the study
of the past means to them.
Objective: The
creation of an independent piece of
fictional writing reflecting on the
metaphor of the journey in terms of any
physical or historical exploration.
This exploration of genre writing
could draw upon the initial discussion of
Reinhard's career and move towards the
travel literature of Bruce Chatwin (e.g.
Short pieces for What am I Doing
Here?) to literary criticism of
Joseph Campbell.
Once students have read, responded and
discussed the proceeding material, they
could use of of the images from the site
gallery to begin their piece of writing.
Student should be able to introduce
the journey concept (or conflict),
develop the characters and conclude with
an appropriate resolution within 2,000
words.
