In the field, archaeologists use a mixture of the latest and the oldest
technology.  Picks and shovels are used just as are laptops and GPS (Global Positioning System) devices.  Standard equipment often includes the following:   trowels, brushes, measuring tapes, cameras, directional arrows, compasses, stakes and string (for laying out grids), altimeters, notebooks, buckets, picks, shovels, sifters, line level, sample bags and tags, Munsell soil color charts, pocket microscope, slate board, centimeter scales, and containers and insulation (for artifacts).

This year, thanks to the support of Bell Sygma International, Dr. Reinhard's team is using digital still and video cameras to document the excavation process (and key phases of conservation in the laboratory).
