Thanks for Visiting!
I'm studying etno-archaeology of the Andes at the university of Leiden in Holland. In January 2000 I hope to end my thesis on sacrifices in the Andes of Bolivia. Three years ago I started my investigation in Bolivia. I've investigated the symbolic meaning of the different kind of sacrifices which modern day Quechua's sacrifice. E.g. When and why do they sacrifice a scorpion and why does it have this significance. Talking to Yatiri's I now know the significance of almost a hundred different symbols which are being sacrificed in modern day Bolivia. However I realise this is only a beginning. I'm planning to migrate to Bolivia and continue my investigations. Apart from this I investigated a few traditional feasts of the Andes and now I'm investigating the chronicles of the 16th and 17th century. Recording which kind of sacrifices the Inca's made and with which significance. Which brings me to you.
I first heard of your investigations when I read The highest altar of Patrick Tierney. Since then I'm very interested in your work and I'll hope you'll continue excavating many other mountains. Unfortunately the only articles I've from you are your articles in the national geographic. I would like to know if you've published more articles about the sacrifices and where I can obtain them. I'm especially interested in a description of the artefacts which where offered together with the mummy's and in the way the mummy's where killed.
Yours faithfully, Alex Dijkstra

Are you interested in Tibet's wild east? I've got a little foundation that does projects there; see www.khamaid.org. I've only been at this for eight years, so I'm sure I don't have as many stories as you, but I'd love to have a story swap-meet some time, if you're ever in California.

Johan,
It's been a long time since we played basketball at Lincoln-Way. I thought that I was the only Lincoln-Way graduate that was able to live their dreams, but after browsing your website,
my adventure of professionally racing the Baja pales in comparison to your
exhilirating adventures.
Congratulations on your most recent discovery and thanks for chasing
your dreams and sharing it with all of us.
Buenos suerte, mi Amigo!

comments = I am an ethnobotanist involved with the
Ancient Starch Research Group, based in
Sydney, Australia. What foods or plants
have been found at high-altitude sacrificial
sites in South America? Have foods been
found in areas where priests and villagers
camped, as well as with the people sacrificed?
Are there any publications that answer
these questions? We are currently reviewing
discoveries of ancient starch in different
contexts around the world.
With thanks, Peter

I am a multiage age teacher of grades 3-4-5. We are reading Frozen Girl as a class. After a chapter or too, I show them the beautiful photos from YOUR book. They are thrilled and so anxious to learn more. They were ectastic when they read you worked with the Field Museum. They are going there from Michigan on June 15, 16, and 17th and they are convinved they will meet you!! Kids who have never been particularly interested in reading any information or learning about history are hanging on every word. This is a very exciting time to be following your adventures and NOT my school curriculum. If I get fired for not doing the standards of my district, can I tag along and write lesson plans for teachers that can follow your adventures?? WE enjoy learning more about you and all you have accomplished. You make learning fun!!! Thanks.

I am interested in studying the belief system and sacrificial practices of the Inca this coming summer. I would really enjoy talking with Prof. Reinhard. After living in Merida, Venezuela for a semester, I have yearned to return to the Andes. I studied the myths of a sacred lake, la Laguna de Urao, in Venezuela. I also have many friends who are climbers who explained their relationships with the mountains. These areas and the people who appreciate them inspire me, and I am anxious to continue my studies in Peru. Pleas contact me if you have the chance. Thank you....

I was highly impressed by the documentary about the Mt.Sera Sera expedition recently shown by the German TV. I would like to express my appreciation for the dedicated work and commitment of the high altitude archaeology team and in particular to Dr. Johan Reinhard. Though I'm even not an amateur in the anthropology, I was catched by issue of the inca's sacrificial ceremonies... It is deffinitely that I'll read everything I could find about inca culture and would like to help somehow to Dr. Reinhards future work and expeditions. All the best and my warmest regards.

Thank you for your intriguing and informative web page. I am also from the Midwest(Nebraska) and have also found myself constantly interested in other cultures since I was a child. Currently I am studying law at NYU, but am bored with these studies but once again I am extemely curious about those around me with cultures different than my own (international students, the New York poor, and law students from rich backgrounds (I'm from the lower middle-class.) People find me easy to relate to as I adapt to their cultures. For the past month I have been trying to explore about anthropology, I'm seriously considering about changing careers. The amazing thing is my fiancee is from Vienna and I am thinking about getting a masters in the States, then go to Vienna to study anthropology. I am also interested in archeology and I didn't realize that someone could be involved in both as a life work. Also, I thought that Vienna's anthropology department did not include archeology. I am sorry about the length of my email, but could you give me any more information about either studying anthropology in Vienna, or putting the two disciplines (cultural anthropology and archeology) together?
Thank you so much for your time!

Dr. Reinhard: Missed the NPR interview. Understand it was a wonderful/exciting interview. Am questioning difference between you and 'looters', a philosophical question I've since early childhood when my interest in archeology first began. Do we not all loot, just in different ways? Is establishing an archeological site in any way morally compromised by the mere presence of outsiders? I don't have the answer and would vote for continuation of digs; however, it is still a question I ask. Good luck. Any appearances scheduled by you or your team anywhere near Oklahoma City?

I once lived in Peru and became fascinatedwith the ancient history of the Incas. Therewas large trapezoid type edifice right behindmy house in San Isidro, a suburb of Lima.I took my children across the street now andthen to observe it and walk around the groundswhich weren't extensive at all. It was hundredsof years old and there it stood, a stone's throwaway, evoking possible stories of sacrificialceremonies. We first lived in Santa Clara, northof Lima. Our front yard bordered on the Granja Azulgolf course. The children and I often walked upthe valley floor behind the golf course, exploringthe area. I remember one particular afternoon, shortly after my youngest daughter was born. She wasonly a few weeks old and I needed the exercise. The older three begged to go "sploring" so we setoff at a slow pace. They ran ahead, jumping over rocks, picking up stuff as they went along. My son, Mark, ran up to me to show me all the funny sticks he hadfound in the dust. I'm a registered nurse so it took meonly a matter of seconds to realize he hada hand full of bones either from a hand or foot.I surmised we must have wandered into a burial areaand hadn't noticed any signs of the site. I tallked Mark in to giving me his nice "sticks" and placed thembehind a large rock. I never took the children up thereagain. It didn't seem right to intrude no matter howinteresting it might have turned out to be. It was badenough the golf course now occupied what must have beena sacred place to the Incas.I always read everything the NG prints about Peru. It ismy little wonderful secret to know I've been there, too.I hope to go back some day. Does NG need any nurses togo along on digs to dispense aspirins and bandaids?

Heard about the expedition and Website on NPR. I'm disappointed that I only heard about
it towards the very end. The idea of following the expedition seems to me to be the
modern-day equivalent of the serial travelogues that used to appear in the newspaper. It
transports us, entertains us, and educates us - so keep up the good work.

I find your work on the volcanic mount in Peru very interesting! I understand that most
of the local Peruvian people are supportive of your work. I learned first hand as an
Archaeology student in Tucson, Arizona back in the seventies that many of the aboriginine
groups of the American southwest were very sensitive about the exhumation and study of
native burials, even when they did not necessarily assume direct kinship with the
deceased. Are there cultural differences that allow the local Peruvians to be more
comfortable with the study of the "Ice Princess"?
