While most of our courses take place at the Spruce Knob Mountain Center, we also offer off-site courses. These courses offer programming that takes advantage of natural areas in the eastern U.S. and eases travel costs for schools unable to come all the way to SKMC. Please scroll down to view a brief listing of our off-site programs.
Potomac River Historical Paddling Trip: Explore the Potomac River by canoe, the same way early explorers did! Students will learn about the history and culture of the Potomac as they paddle past its many historic sites. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, Antietam National Battlefield, and Fort Frederick are excellent backdrops for learning about the Civil War, early development of canals and railroads, and the distinct regional architecture. The trip concludes at Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, where Ghost Tours are available in the evening.
Hike, Climb, and Raft along the Appalachian Trail in Western Maryland : On this exciting outdoor adventure, students hike a section of the Appalachian Trail in Maryland's Greenbrier State Park, rock climb at Annapolis Rocks, and raft the Shenandoah River. A true adventure sampler! We are currently developing a similar trip based in Shenandoah National Park.
Hiking, Climbing, and Team Development along the Appalachian Trail: Based in Worthington State Forest, NJ. Students stay in group campsites with nearby running water and toilet facilities. Groups explore a glacial pond, hike to a waterfall, participate in teambuilding initiatives, and climb at a natural rock site.
Canoeing the South Branch River: A multi-day canoe trip on the South Branch of the Potomac River. Includes a section of the river known as the “Trough,” a breathtaking canyon with steep, forested mountains, and the chance to see Bald and Golden eagles!
Canoeing the Delaware Water Gap: Explore the Delaware River by canoe through the Delaware Water Gap, a geologically and historically rich area of New Jersey.
Local Stream Sampling: Engage your students in a stream study of the chemical, physical, and biological aspects of your town's stream. Students will come out of the experience understanding the necessity for clean, healthy streams in their area.
If you are excited about outdoor learning but don't see a program here that is convenient for you, please get in touch anyway! We are happy to work with you to better suit your school's needs. We hike, climb, sample streams, teach experiential science lessons, and canoe in all areas, and enjoy exploring new locations. We would love to help fill your adventure education needs!
