Photos from Community Watershed Project in Western Nepal

We are pleased to share these photos from our community watershed work with communities in the Ghuti Khola watershed in the Humla District of northwest Nepal. Humla is one of Nepal’s most remote and economically challenged districts; the harsh and arid landscape makes growing crops difficult resulting in household food shortages for up to six months per year. Over the past year, the local communities with support from The Mountain Institute have:
- Constructed more than 13 kilometers of irrigation canals that will make 56 acres of crop land productive, directly helping to feed hundreds of households
- Improved 62 additional acres of agricultural land by removing stones and building walls to keep out free-range livestock
- Reforested and stabilized 50 acres of landslide prone hillsides by planting apple, pine and dhatelo trees
- Held trainings for eight communities to teach practical climate change adaptation skills such as cash crop cultivation, erosion management and reforestation
