Welcome to Vicos, Perú!

Dear Potential Visitor,

The Cuyaquihayi Tourism Project in Vicos began in 2001, when The Mountain Institute (TMI) initiated a sustainable, community-based tourism project in the village.  TMI strengthened project members’ capacities in tourism service: guiding; preparing meals under hygienic conditions; sharing their local culture and responding with a variety of practical solutions to the needs of visiting tourists.  We welcomed the first group of tourists to our project in May 2002.

Since then, we have had the pleasure of serving many successive groups of visitors.  They were all enchanted by their stay in our village and found interaction with our community a most rewarding and educational experience.  We encourage you to come to Vicos and experience our hospitality.  Your patronage will mean a lot to us since it helps our families and develops our community.  Thank you very much for your interest, and we hope you will visit our homepage.

With best wishes,
Los Vicosinos

How Funds are Utilized for Community Development

Part of the revenue is set aside for community development as well as management of the Yachaqui Wayi Responsible Travel Center.  At least ten percent of tourism revenue is set aside for the community.  Members undertake an annual assessment of the needs of the community to determine how best to spend these funds.  In previous years, contributions were always made to colleges and schools in Vicos for the purchase of tables and chairs.

In addition to supporting this community development fund, the Vicos project pays the community two soles per visitor to La Casa de Abuelos, a cultural museum administered by the Campesino community. In this way, the Vicos project provides indirect support to the artisans, musicians, porters and herders of pack animals.
