Outdoor Education, Custom Programs and Retreats

With a birds-eye view of the Potomac highlands, students engage in group activities in a classroom setting beyond compare.
Since 1972 The Mountain Institute has been providing educational experiences for youth. School programs are the oldest component of The Mountain Institute, and the Spuce Knob staff is commited to keeping them exciting, rewarding, educational, and fun.

Whether it is an overnight for the Girl Scouts, a two-day program for the fourth graders of a local public school, or five days with a ninth grade class from a private all boys school, these mountain experiences deliver excitement. We help students discover what wilderness is truly like and what it means to function as part of this environment. A combination of challenges and fun provide valuable lessons in group performance, leadership and self trust.

We are not a survival school; and some of our groups even choose to stay in the dorms. But all programs have a strong emphasis on environmental education and there are always opportunities for adventure. We travel locally, and usually by foot, to wonderful educational sites, such as:

  • Spruce Knob to study geology and the effect of weather systems
  • Open meadows to learn map and compass skills
  • One of two local caves to see a different ecosystem and learn about this geological wonder
  • Big Run to study stream life and how forest management affects it
  • Beaver ponds to learn about one of the only other animals to modify the environment to suit their needs
  • The forest lands to learn about animals and their habitat

Although these are some of our standard activities we are by no means limited to them. We have hosted many other types of programs requested by visiting groups. Please call our office at 1-800-874-3050 to speak about your specific program needs. Costs are determined on length of stay, number of participants and accommodations (field or dorm).
