Research and Education Program

Alton C. Byers, Ph.D., Director

Formally established in December 2001, The Mountain Institute’s Research and Education Program promotes the use of applied research, mountain education, publications, and exploration as institutional strengthening, learning, and sustainable development tools. The Program operates in a cross-programmatic capacity that promotes the vision, mission, and goals of TMI and unifies its various projects and programs.

Major program components include:

I. Applied Research/Exploration: Strengthening TMI’s capacity to incorporate integrated, applied field research (physical and social sciences) in the design, implementation, and monitoring/evaluation of all programs for greater understanding of impacts; and for the development of new, cutting-edge methods and initiatives.

II. Mountain Education: Enhancing TMI’s ability to increase local/global awareness for the importance of mountain peoples and environments through the development of secondary and higher education courses, curriculum, textbooks, and peer-reviewed publications.
