Spruce
Knob Mountain Center
The Spruce Knob Mountain Center (SKMC)
conserves mountain environments and promotes mountain cultures
by providing a center for enhanced mountain education, applied
research,
demonstration, and training initiatives. SKMC programs
are
designed to serve the needs of The Mountain Institute, the broader
mountain community, and to raise awareness and support for mountain
communities and ecosystems among the general public.
Introduction
The Spruce Knob Mountain Center (SKMC) serves as TMI's
400-acre education, demonstration, conservation, research, and conference
facility. It
is located in Pendleton County on the upper slopes of Spruce Knob
mountain (4,863'), West Virginia's highest point. For nearly 30 years,
The Mountain Institute has used the SKMC as a base for its national
and international programs in outdoor education, research, sustainable
land use demonstrations, and yearly conferences on important mountain
issues. Programs for all ages are generally offered from March through
November.
Presently, the Spruce Knob Mountain Center is open eight months of
the year, (from mid-March through the end of November). Throughout
the year, the property is supervised by a full time caretaker and
his family who live on site. Programmatic staff often reside at the
Center during the season.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or comments
about the SKMC, or if you you would like to inquire about using the
facility.
